It is not easy to find grants and it is even more difficult to prepare your grant proposal. Once you come up with the most appropriate grant, you have to work with the proposal to make them accept your offering. In many cases, you need to fulfill their request and requirements as the format your proposal should have. These requirements can be different from one another depending on the grants, so make sure that you know all of them first before start writing. Also, prepare your proposal properly before start writing.
- How to Start. The very first thing to start designing your grant proposal is to understand the application. The application usually covers some questions and materials. They must be well addressed properly. So start to think about how you can answer them and how all materials can be included in your proposal. Check for some keywords and mark them. You might need to use them again when answering questions to ensure that your proposal is all about addressing what is in the application.
- Assessing Purpose. There is always a purpose that you need the grant and it should be provided. The purpose is usually related to your organization. If it is about health, then you might need the grant for supporting certain illnesses. In this case, your organization should play a role. Provide some information about what your organization has done and contributed related to the targeted purpose. This will help a foundation convince that you are capable of managing the grant.
- Brainstorming. To write something about your organization, brainstorming is required. You should outline some values of your organization to be included. There must be some programs and you can explain them. Brainstorming will help you write your proposal easier since you already had what you are going to write.
- Start with a Summary Statement. You haven’t started your proposal, but your summary statement can be made first. This section is the biggest and most important part of the proposal since it covers the main purpose while the rest in the document will be the details and supported information. Summary Statement provides information about which you are, in this case, is your organization, your project, your plan, the amount of money you are asking and how it will be used. When describing your organization, do this carefully in detail. Even if the grantor already known it, do this as if they didn’t, this summary statement later can be included in your proposal as the abstract since some grants require this.
This shouldn’t be perfect because you are still making a draft. You just need to know what should be provided and how it is stated. Once you finish your preparation, you can start working with your proposal using those you have prepared. You can still make one more draft, which is the outline. It covers every section in your proposal with the required format or requirements requested by the grants. Also, make sure that your proposal is offering something the grants usually provide money for.
